Engineering nonsense into reality

How I Got Started: From Hobby Prints to Helping During a Crisis

A lot of people ask how I first got into 3D printing, and the truth is: it started as a technical curiosity tied to my patent work. I picked up my first printer back in 2018, mostly because I wanted to understand the technology better — how it worked, what it could do, and why so many inventors were excited about it. But like most hobbies in the maker world, it didn’t stay small for long.

When the COVID‑19 pandemic hit, stories began circulating about people using home 3D printers to help with PPE shortages. That’s when I realized this little machine on my desk could actually make a difference. I started printing simple mask‑strain relievers and sharing the results online. Almost immediately, friends and colleagues reached out saying they knew doctors’ offices and clinics that needed them. That snowballed into printing NIH‑approved face shields — and eventually running multiple printers “full‑time” to get them into the hands of healthcare workers across Virginia, Maryland, and D.C.

Virginia Lawyers Weekly covered the story at the time, highlighting how a hobbyist’s curiosity turned into a small but meaningful contribution during a moment of real need. That experience cemented something for me: making isn’t just about gadgets and experiments — it’s about solving real problems for real people. And that’s the energy I’m bringing into this blog and into BezosWorx. Whether it’s a pandemic‑era face shield or a tiny bracket that keeps someone’s cabinet door from sagging, I love the process of turning ideas into useful things. This space will keep chronicling that journey, one project at a time.
